Less watering. Less mowing. Less mud.

Rock & low-water landscaping built from the grade up.

A durable rock yard is more than stone spread over dirt. WBS plans the grade, prepares a stable base, installs the barrier and borders, and then places the finish material so the yard stays clean and intentional through Alberta seasons.

  • Full and partial lawn conversions
  • Decorative rock beds
  • Low-water layouts
  • Clean borders and plant pockets

Where this service fits

Decide where rock earns its place.

The strongest low-water plans respond to how each part of the yard is used. Foot traffic, snow storage, falling leaves, retained plants, and the lawn you still enjoy all affect where a rock finish makes sense.

High-maintenance lawn

Reduce the amount of turf that needs weekly watering, mowing, and repair.

Tired front beds

Replace faded mulch, patchy planting, and loose edges with a sharper layout.

Muddy side yards

Create a cleaner route through narrow areas that never grow healthy grass.

New-build blank slates

Turn bare soil and weeds into a finished yard with a practical maintenance plan.

What a written scope may include

Price the preparation, not only the stone.

Material colour is the visible decision, but removal, grade, base, borders, access, and delivered quantity usually determine whether the finished area feels deliberate. The quote identifies those supporting items by area.

  • Site assessment and material planning
  • Removal or preparation of existing surface
  • Grading and compacted base where required
  • Commercial landscape fabric where appropriate
  • Decorative rock placement
  • Edging, transitions, and final cleanup

The project sequence

Set the water path, base, borders, and finish in order.

Planning transitions before rock arrives helps protect retained lawn, keep material out of walkways, and avoid covering a low spot that still needs attention.

Plan the layout

We review drainage, access, the lawn you want to keep, and how the finished areas should connect.

Prepare the ground

Existing material is removed or reshaped, and the grade is corrected before the visible finish goes down.

Build the system

Base, barrier, borders, and transitions are installed for the conditions of the yard.

Place and finish

Rock is spread to the planned depth, edges are cleaned, and the result is walked through with you.

Plan a useful rock-landscaping quote

Show which surfaces change and which features stay.

A few site details help separate a straightforward bed refresh from a conversion that needs removal, grading, or difficult material access.

  • Wide photos showing the house, yard slope, paths, and every transition into the proposed rock area
  • Approximate length and width of each area, plus the gate or route available for material movement
  • Plants, lawn, edging, irrigation components, or other features that must remain undisturbed
  • Preferred rock colours or examples, while allowing the quote to confirm current local supply and delivery

Questions before the quote

Make the maintenance and drainage trade-offs clear.

These answers distinguish a lower-maintenance rock layout from a maintenance-free promise and explain why the condition below the stone still matters.

Before requesting rock & low-water yards, see how the quote and project process works, confirm the Red Deer-to-Edmonton service area, or browse the landscaping FAQ.

Will a rock yard be completely weed-free?

No outdoor surface is maintenance-free. Proper preparation and barrier can greatly reduce weeds, but windblown seed and organic debris still need occasional attention.

Can I keep some lawn and convert only part of the yard?

Yes. Partial conversions are often the best balance. We can keep useful lawn while converting hard-to-water slopes, side yards, and high-maintenance beds.

Does rock landscaping help drainage?

Rock can be part of a drainage solution, but it does not replace correct grading. Water movement is considered first so the finish material does not hide an underlying problem.

Can I choose the rock colour and size?

Yes. Availability and delivered pricing vary, so the quote process narrows the options that suit the layout, budget, and local supply.
